World Health Organization Faces Major Workforce Cuts Following United States Funding Withdrawal
This international public health organization revealed intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a quarter โ totaling over two thousand positions โ by mid-2026.
Funding Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring
This move follows after the US, previously the agency's biggest contributor, withdrew financial support earlier this year.
Washington was responsible for approximately eighteen percent of the agency's overall budget, creating a substantial financial gap.
Projected Staff Cuts
Based on organizational projections, the workforce will decrease from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.
The decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions comprises staff reductions, retirements, and regular departures.
"The past year was one of the most difficult in WHO's existence, as we have navigated a challenging but necessary process of prioritization and restructuring," commented the organization's leader.
Financial Gap Persists
This Switzerland-headquartered body currently faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, representing nearly a quarter of its required budget.
The figure marks an reduction from a prior projected shortfall of $1.7bn reported in May.
Not Included Funding
These financial projections exclude an additional $1.1bn in potential contributions from ongoing discussions with multiple donors.
The spokesperson for the organization stated that the current unsecured part of the budget is actually lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple factors:
- Reduced total budget size
- Initiation of a fresh fundraising campaign
- An increase in member states' required fees
The realignment initiative is now approaching its end, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a reshaped operational model.
