The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.

The vote against George Abaraonye reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also reported to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes announced on Tuesday.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The announcement stated that the future president was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.

The letter criticized the union of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The president-elect had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the union in May.
