Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Title Defense with Thrilling Overtime Victory
The Thunder star joined the Thunder in 2019.
The Thunder's star player delivered the decisive points late in a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, securing the titleholders a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.
"Determination and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Prior to the game, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to get some early revenge on this Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from Luka Doncic was not enough to stop his current team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
